About Me and How I Work

I am a registered clinical counsellor and psychotherapist with a private practice in North Hobart, where I provide depth focused therapy for individuals and couples.
My background
My career began almost 15 years ago in children’s education, where I became interested in alternative methods of teaching and learning focused on creativity and nature connection. I pursued this interest to different parts of the world, and in the process learned a lot about the kind of guidance that helps nurture growth and development. Most importantly I learned that being of genuine help to people - whether children or adults - begins with deep listening for the uniqueness of their lived experience. This insight motivated me to train first as an art therapist with the Sydney College of Complimentary Medicine, then as a counsellor and psychotherapist with ACAP University College. I worked for several years in the Northern Territory before moving to Tasmania to set up my private practice in Hobart.
The primary way that I work is called psychodynamic therapy
While I have training and experience in a range of approaches, including CBT and ACT, the primary way that I work is a depth focused approach called psychodynamic therapy. In contrast to these other approaches, which use prescribed tools or strategies to change unhelpful patterns of thought and behaviour, psychodynamic therapy is focused on building a uniquely reflective relationship to explore and examine your experience in depth.
A typical session allows for the discussion of a range of themes which may be relevant to your aims for therapy. This includes links to early life experiences, family dynamics, patterns of attachment, interpersonal relationships, dreams and somatic phenomena (deeply held emotions). The aim being to help you build awareness and self-understanding, which in turns builds your capacity to navigate your life without becoming overwhelmed or anguished, and nurture more fulfilling relationships.
